Project Overview

Capture Ireland’s history through its old and
fading signs

Ghost Signs of Ireland is an opportunity for everyone to contribute to documenting old and fading signage throughout the island of Ireland. Ghost signs are traces of the past - signs of businesses which no longer operate. Examples are handpainted signs on brick, carved stone signs, fading fascia signs or old doorsteps.

How does it work?

The Ghost Signs of Ireland Project is accessible through the Space Engagers app, where contributing is easy.

1  Upload your picture

Take a picture of a ghost sign you have spotted. Next, choose where in Ireland the sign is located under the four provincial icons.

2 Add Information

Once a picture has been taken the user is prompted to provide information, for example on what have they recorded and why. The picture and information is then posted onto a shared map that everyone can see.

3  Interact with other posts

Contribute to the community by starting or join a discussion on any post that interests you. Users can like, comment on, and share any post, generating conversations locally and further afield.

Collected Information

What about the data?

The data gathered will form part of a unique and open archive of this neglected aspect of Ireland’s social, cultural and graphic heritage.

The map is accessible to anyone and it is possible to download the data in different formats from the web app.
